Redstring privacy

The short version

Redstring (formerly Farplay) has no adverts, no analytics, no third-party trackers and no advertising identifiers. It does not sell or share your data. What you put in is visible to you and to the one partner you linked with — and cycle data, not even to them unless you say so. Last updated 27 October 2026.

Who it is for

Redstring is for adults. You must be 18 or older to create an account. We set the bar higher than most apps because it handles menstrual cycle data, which is health data, and carries private messages between two people.

What an account stores

• Your email address, so you can sign in — or a Google, Apple or Facebook sign-in identifier. Passwords are handled by Google Firebase Authentication and are never stored by us.
• Your display name, your time zone, an optional relationship start date and an optional profile picture.
• The link between your account and your partner’s, and the one-time invite code that created it. If you unlink, the reason you pick is kept with the ended couple.
• Game results and times, the challenges and wagers you write, and the rewards they produce.
• What you make for each other: notes, doodles, drawings in Draw & Guess and on your shared board, emoji clues in Emoji Guess with their answers and guesses, your answers to the daily question, the mood you share, and the cards, wishes and love coupons you save in the games.
• Photos you choose to send — to your partner’s home screen, of a place you want to visit, or as a Guess Where I Am round.
• Films and series you save, mark watched, or schedule a night for.
• Shared goals, their steps, countdowns, the dreams you collect and the special dates you add.
• Your hearts — the balance you earn in the app — the gifts you send with them, and the outfits for the two figures on your Home screen.
• Heart packs and other purchases: which one was added to your account and when, with a scrambled reference to the store’s receipt so one purchase is never counted twice. Payment is handled entirely by Google Play or the App Store; we never see card or bank details.
• Your phone’s push notification token, so what your partner does reaches you as a notification.

The chat

• The messages you send your partner: text, photos, voice messages of up to two minutes and videos of up to 30 seconds, with replies and reactions.
• When each of you last looked at the thread, which is what “Seen” shows.
• Videos are made smaller on your phone before they are sent. A message you take back is deleted, with its photo, recording or video.
• The microphone is used only while you record a voice message or a video, and the camera only when you tap it.

Your life together

• To-do lists and their items, shared or private, with dates, reminders and who does what.
• Calendar plans: the title, date and time, time zone, kind of plan, place, note and reminders, who is in, and the comments and reactions on them.
• Money: the expenses you log — amount, currency, category, who paid, how it is split, the day, a note — settle-ups, budgets, savings goals and what goes into them, and bills that repeat. If you split by income, each of your shares as a percentage, never an income itself.
• Receipt photos you add, kept with their expense. The total, the shop and the day are read off the picture on your phone; the picture is never sent anywhere to be read.
• Recipes you add, your favourites, what you have in the kitchen and the meals you cook together, and the decisions and dilemmas you weigh.
• The shared gallery: the photos and videos of up to 30 seconds you add, with their captions, albums, reactions and comments.
• The vault: photos you lock away are encrypted on your phone before they are stored. We keep only the encrypted copy and cannot open it.
• Your answers to the love languages quiz, which your partner sees beside theirs.
• Places you save to visit together: the name, address, kind of place, an optional note and an optional photo.

What your partner sees about your phone

The partner status card and widget show your partner your side of the world:

• The time it is for you, from your phone’s time zone.
• When you last opened Redstring.
• Your battery level and whether it is charging — only while “Share my battery” is on. It is read when you open the app or when the widgets refresh, and each reading replaces the last.
• A status you pick, such as “Free to talk”, which disappears on its own after a few hours.
• The sky over your city, worked out on the phone from sunrise and sunset. No weather or location service is asked.

Location — only what you choose to share

• The city you share, rounded to about 11 km, so the two of you see the distance between you. You can stop sharing it at any time.
• The place of a photo you send in Guess Where I Am, chosen for that one photo — from the photo itself, from where you are when you tap, or from the map — rounded to about 100 metres and shown only to your partner.
• “Near me” on a map reads your approximate location once, on a tap, to move the map there. It is not stored.
• Your location is never tracked and never read in the background.

Menstrual cycle data

Kept apart from everything above, because it is health data and deserves different handling:

• Private by default. When you log a cycle, only you can read it.
• Sharing is opt-in and per-item — phase and predicted next period can be shared without symptoms or mood.
• Notes are never shared, whatever else is switched on.
• Revoking access takes effect on the server immediately, not just in the app’s display.
• It is never used for advertising, sold, or given to any third party.

What we deliberately do not collect

The only photos, videos and recordings we keep are the ones you choose to send or add. Pictures and videos are picked through the system’s own picker, so the app never reads your photo library, and the app lock uses your phone’s own fingerprint or face check — nothing biometric reaches the app.

• Contacts.
• Your location in the background, ever.
• Your photo library.
• Advertising identifiers.

Where it is stored

Google Firebase — Authentication and Cloud Firestore — operated by Google LLC, in the European Union (Firestore multi-region eur3). Server-side security rules do the enforcing: your account data is readable only by you, couple data only by the two linked partners, private lists and expenses only by you, and cycle data only by you plus a partner you have explicitly granted access to. Everything travels encrypted.

Services that answer a single request

• Notifications to your partner travel through Expo’s push service and then Google Firebase Cloud Messaging or Apple Push Notifications, carrying only the notification and the push token.
• Maps and place names come from OpenStreetMap services — Photon (komoot) and OpenFreeMap — which see the place searched or the area of the map shown, never your account.
• Films and series: what you type in a search goes to Wikidata’s public search with the app’s language; descriptions are read from Wikipedia and series posters are shown from TVmaze. Nothing that identifies you is sent.
• Exchange rates for Money come from Frankfurter, which publishes the European Central Bank’s daily rates. Only the currencies and the day are asked for.

Your copy, and deleting it

Settings, then Data & privacy, then Export my data shows everything the app holds about you. Settings, then Data & privacy, then Delete account removes your cycle data, your private lists and expenses, your shared couple data — the chat, the gallery, your status, game rounds and their photos included — your profile and your sign-in, in that order. You can also write to us and we will do it within 30 days; see how to delete your account.

Leaving your partner’s side of it

Settings, then Partner, then Unlink. Your shared history is archived and neither of you can reach it in the app afterwards. Re-linking starts a fresh couple.
